The Teaching Institute began with a presentation by Mimi Abramovitz, the Bertha Capen Reynolds Professor of Social Policy at the Silberman School of Social Work, Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center.  The presentation titled “Setting the Stage: A New Era for Teaching Policy” challenged the audience to explore the context of today’s policy landscape by examining our time and place in history. Participants then had a choice of intensive, half-day sessions (morning and afternoon), led by accomplished social work instructors, that focused on teaching the history of social welfare, teaching policy analysis, teaching current policies and programs, and teaching policy advocacy. A new lunchtime activity featured six facilitated roundtable discussions during which participants discussed hot topics including teaching political social work, policy instruction for direct practice, and integrating policy into field education.
